Fronting the band is singer, pianist, and songwriter Davina Sowers, whose voice has drawn comparisons to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, and Billie Holiday—though really, she sounds like nobody but herself. Pulling from Fats Domino, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Aretha Franklin, and Tom Waits, the band moves through a century of American music in a single set: New Orleans jazz, Memphis soul, gospel, ragtime, blues, and a little Kurt Weill-style theatrical edge. It’s music with deep roots, played with the energy and personality of a band firmly planted in the present.
