Alex Cuba: Redefining Latin Music
Alex Cuba, born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, has reshaped Latin music with his sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks, and powerful guitar riffs. Immersed in music from a young age, he started with his father’s group of 24 guitarists and later studied electric and upright bass.
In 1999, Alex moved to Victoria, B.C., and recorded “Morumba Cubana” with his twin brother Adonis as The Puentes Brothers. His solo debut, “Humo De Tobaco,” won a Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year in 2006. His follow-up album, “Agua Del Pozo,” earned him another Juno in 2008.
Alex’s self-titled album in 2009 featured his first English track, “If You Give Me Love,” gaining international recognition. He won Best New Artist at the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards and was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Album and Best Latin Pop Album at the Grammys.
In 2010, Alex won a BMI Latin Award for writing Nelly Furtado’s hit “Manos Al Aire.” His fourth album, “Ruido En El Sistema,” earned him a second Socan Hagood Hardy Award and a Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Song for “Toma Mi Vida.”
His fifth album, “Healer,” won a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter and was Grammy-nominated for Best Latin Pop in 2016. His sixth album, “Lo Unico Constante,” delves into his Cuban songwriting roots and was nominated for both a Latin Grammy and a Grammy.
In 2019, Alex released a self-produced album featuring collaborations with Latin American artists, receiving a Latin Grammy nomination. His eighth album, “Mendó,” recorded at home, highlights his continuous musical evolution, rooted in a search for simplicity and soul in Cuban music. By deconstructing complex arrangements, blending North American influences, embracing the melodic simplicity of pop, and drawing inspiration from Cuban folk traditions, Alex consistently creates fresh, innovative music that resonates deeply with audiences.
