SUMMARY:Mingus Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Low Ticket Alert\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “The Mingus Band has taken a musical legacy and transformed it into a creative force. They are a constant reminder that jazz—big band jazz\, at that—is not merely entertainment but a powerful art form and means of expression.” \n-All About Jazz \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Mingus Big Band is one of the most celebrated large jazz ensembles in the world. The band has released twelve recordings\, earned seven Grammy nominations\, and won the GRAMMY Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in 2011 for Live at Jazz Standard. Their recent projects include The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions\, released in 2022 and nominated for a GRAMMY\, followed by Volume II in 2024 on Candid Records. A mainstay at major festivals and prestigious venues worldwide\, Mingus Big Band is also a New York institution\, known for its long-running residencies and its rotating roster of elite and rising jazz musicians. \nCreated to realize composer and bassist Charles Mingus’s vision for large-ensemble performance\, Mingus Big Band builds on the legacy of earlier projects such as Mingus Dynasty and the monumental Epitaph orchestra. The 14-piece ensemble was designed to explore Mingus’s compositions at a scale he often imagined but was unable to consistently assemble during his lifetime. Through bold new arrangements and deep collective improvisation\, the band keeps Mingus’s music alive as a living\, evolving art form.
